Starting as a Chicago small forge shop in 1893, today Scot Forge can forge parts weighing up to 300,000 lbs. and roll seamless rings up to 252 in diameter. Scot Forge History From Humble Beginnings Scot Forge started from humble beginnings with four brothers, looking for a better future, who traveled from the Shetland Islands in Scotland to America. They found their success in the steel industry and opened a small, six-man hammer forge shop in Chicago in 1893, under the name A. Kropp Forge. The Chicago area was booming in the 1890s, but by mid-decade a financial panic overtook the nation and in 1914, the company was bought by a group of Ryerson employees and renamed Kruse Forgings. Then, two years later, the name was changed to Atlas Forge partly as a marketing endeavor so the company would be first in the phonebook - listing are alphabetical – and by 1919, Atlas Forge moved to Cicero, Illinois. More than 60 years later a new greenfield manufacturing plant was built in Clinton, Wisconsin. This unusual plant location was due to the Cicero plant growth being hindered by a stationary noise law in Illinois. At this point, in 1977, the company name would change again to Scot Forge and a Scottish highlander became part of the corporate logo. Along with the new name came a unique sales promotional tool – the wearing of tartan apparel by the personnel. Continued growth created a need for a third manufacturing plant to be built in Spring Grove, Illinois, which became the permanent headquarters for Scot Forge. Additionally, in 1978 the owning family decided to sell the company to the Scot Forge employees starting the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). The company continued to grow from 1985 to 1997. The Cicero plant moved to Franklin Park, Illinois, and Scot Forge formed two partnerships that turned into join ventures – Ringmasters and North American Forgemasters (NAF). Today, Scot Forge operates with more than 1.3 million sq.ft. of manufacturing space between the five plants and we ship more than 250 million lbs. of forgings annually. We are proud to be a 100% employee-owned manufacturer of custom, open die forgings and seamless rolled rings. In 1893, The A. Kropp Forge Company was little more than a blacksmith shop, where workers performed all tasks by hand. The Chicago area was booming in the 1890s, but by mid-decade a financial panic overtook the nation. Business did not recover until the outbreak of World War II. Demand continued after the war and into the Korean War in the early 1950s. This photo shows one of the large hammers placed into service. Prior to the use of modern, mobile manipulators and hydraulic presses, forging work was done by hand, with spider-like manual manipulating tools. This picture taken of Scot Forge employees in the Cicero Plant, shows that workers had to be strong, hardy and filled with stamina to handle the demands of the physical labor. The addition of this 8,000 lb. hammer with the innovative rotator allowed Scot Forge to enter the forged round bar market with the steel service centers. Plant and office staff pose for this 1948 photo. A. Kropp and Company had been incorporated as the Kruse Forgings company in 1914 and the name was changed to Atlas Forging Company in 1916. It wouldn't be known as Scot Forge Company until 1978, coinciding with the institution of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Why Plaid? Well, as it turns out, Pete “Spike” Georgeson ordered one tartan jacket to help him get noticed at a luncheon… and it worked! So well in fact, that he decided he needed to order a couple more jackets, so he asked for a swatch of every tartan to decide what to order. Somewhere along the line, the tailor thought he said one jacket in every tartan. Rather than returning all of the jackets Pete decided to give them to his sales team and the rest is history. Open Die Presses and Upset Press Capabilities Featuring presses that are engineered and built in-house, our facilities offer unlimited flexibility and speed throughout the forging process. Eight open die hydraulic presses coupled with modern mobile manipulators and the latest in electronics and hydraulics produce a limitless variety of shapes and sizes in both ferrous and non-ferrous materials up to 100,000 lbs. The creativity and skill of our forgemasters allow the versatility to produce complex open and semi-closed die forgings. High-Tonnage Ring Mills Combined resources gives Scot Forge the ability to offer single-piece or high-volume quantities of rolled rings. The forging process produces rings with controlled grain flow, which gives strength and resistance to impact and fatigue not found in rings torch cut from plate, or rolled and welded. If you need rings in a hurry, Ringmasters, our joint venture in Wayne, Michigan, offers deliveries in as little as 5 business days. Forging Hammers and Tooling Combining pneumatic hammers with state-of-the-art heating and manipulating equipment, we can produce blank, ring, dumbbell, single and double hub forgings in a wide range of shapes and sizes. We have developed a unique system which combines hammers and a vast inventory in excess of 10,000 loose tools. Simple and complex custom forgings can be produced close to near net shape configurations without the quantity requirements of closed die. Hot Rolled Bar Mill with Sound-Centers Our well-equipped bar mill has dedicated planishing, cutting, heat treating, straightening, machining and testing equipment to ensure consistent high quality and fast turnaround times. Our unique Tartan Bars® are manufactured through a combination of the forging and planishing process, resulting in bars with a forged sound center, rolled bar surface quality and extremely tight dimensional tolerances. CNC Torch Cutting Combined resources gives Scot Forge the ability to offer single-piece or high-volume quantities of rolled rings. IN-HOUSE HEAT TREATMENT Each Scot Forge facility houses its own heat treat department to provide normalizing, annealing, quenching, tempering, stress relieving, spheroidize annealing, solution annealing and straightening. Nine custom-design quenchant systems work in tandem with over 40 furnaces. Specialized material handling equipment enables us to heat treat parts up to 70' long or 252" in diameter, including vertical heat treatment up to 110" long. Our Spring Grove facility is accredited to the very stringent Nadcap® Heat Treating conformity assessment. Mechanical and Metallurgical Testing Through active participation in numerous industry associations, including ASTM, AGMA, FIA and the International Metallography Association, Scot Forge stays on the cutting edge of forging technology and advancement. Machining Capabilities Utilizing over 75 machining centers, Scot Forge can turn, mill or bore your parts as specified, with finishes ranging from 32 to 500 RMS. With over two dozen horizontal turret and engine lathes, we are able to turn shafts or bars up to 80" diameter, with lengths to 550" long. Boring capabilities are available to 30" I.D. by 300" long. The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) was chartered in 1862 to certify ship captains. Our responsibility is to leave it better than we found it and preserving our world for future generations has been top-of-mind for Scot Forge for many years. As employee-owners of this planet, we have to leave the environment better than we found it. These are some of the ways we do today, and in the spirit of continuous improvement, we will In 2019, we purchased 175,557,236 lbs. of steel, all of which came from recycled steel and alloys. Additionally, in one form or another, we recycle any steel not sold to our customers. As a result, roughly 61.8 million lbs. of unused product, or scrap, were recycled this past year: from the scale formed during forging to the leftover material or turnings from the machining process. Furthermore, we recycle other consumables from our shop such as used or damaged machine inserts, saw blades, electronics, batteries, gloves, paper and other office materials. At Scot Forge, continuous improvement is key, so our teams are consistently looking for ways to make our assets more efficient. Here are just three examples. We designed our 16,500-ton press to have three times the tonnage of our 5,500-ton press while using less average power through our energy-saving tactics. We converted old air compressors to far more efficient compressors in our Franklin Park plant and changed the hammers from steam to compressed air. We have converted our presses to hydraulics to achieve minimal heat creation and energy use during production. To reduce our carbon footprint even further, we have converted lighting in our plants to LED light fixtures and have installed motion detection to conserve electricity. With an average house in the US using 10,972 kWh per year, the annual energy savings from moving our lighting to LED is more than the amount of power used by 450+ homes per year. We try to achieve energy savings wherever possible. Part of this initiative includes optimizing our forge furnaces through batching our parts to reduce the number of cycles we need to run, and by firing our burners in pairs. Our systems allow the burners to switch roles, which provides for systematic heat storage. The burner preheats the air used for combustion and saves approximately 43% of the natural gas-operated with a traditional combustion system. To heat up a typical 150-ton load, we save more than 150 MMBtu (million Btu). This savings is equivalent to the furnace running in more than 60 houses continuously for 24 hours. Finally, the foundations of our assets are built with a zero-leak structure to ensure we have no spillage into the ground that could potentially contaminate the groundwater. And, the water we use at our Spring Grove plant for various processes is recycled and returned to Nippersink Creek from which it came. The creek sees frequent recreational use. We take it upon ourselves to ensure the water we put into it is of the highest quality through a retention pond system to guarantee our water is cleaned before entering the Nippersink. This system comprises three different ponds, each of which allows the water to flow through filters that clean out any substances in the water. We can help you today!
