Guaranteeing Your Part Meets Expectations & End-Use Requirements

Scot Forge has invested time in recruiting top talent in the fields of metallurgy and engineering to provide customers a level of metal forming technical expertise and support that is unmatched.

Scot Forge on-staff, in-house metallurgists and quality inspectors implement testing methods that support production, quality control and research and development for our customers. Our expertise includes:

  • Nondestructive examination
  • Destructive testing
  • Metallurgy review and support
  • Failure analysis

Forgings Requiring Nadcap Nondestructive Testing

Scot Forge’s Nadcap Nondestructive Testing (NDT) certification is not automatically applied to all orders which require NDT. If Nadcap NDT is required, it must be specified on the purchase order.

Nondestructive Testing

Guaranteed Quality Requirements Lower Costs

Scot Forge staffs an inspection team of industry certified personnel trained to use the latest and most advanced equipment in the field. Our on-site NDE services utilize Magnetic Particle, Liquid Penetrant and Ultrasonic Testing methods that are Nadcap accredited, when contracted. These services guarantee your forgings meet the quality requirements essential for the intended application, saving time and money.

Nondestructive examination methods

  • Ultrasonic inspection (UT): contact a-scan testing
  • Magnetic particle (MT): wet fluorescent, dry powder
  • Liquid penetrant (PT): water washable fluorescent, visible dye
  • Elemental analysis using optical emission and x-ray fluorescence spectrometry

ASNT and ACCP

All personnel performing nondestructive testing at Scot Forge are certified in accordance with written procedures that meet and exceed the guidelines of ASNT Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A.[1] and NAS‑410.[2]

Additionally, all of our Level III inspectors are third-party-certified or in the process of becoming certified as ASNT NDT Level III and ASNT ACCP Professional Level III.

Our Nondestructive testing systems is accredited to the very stringent Nadcap Nondestructive Testing conformity assessment.

Mechanical Testing

Scot Forge metallurgists also use an array of mechanical, destructive test methods to understand part performance and material behavior under different load environments. By discovering the elasticity and failure threshold of a part we can ensure part reliability in the field.

Mechanical testing methods

  • Tensile
  • Dynamic tear
  • Hardness
  • Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD)*
  • Fracture toughness (KIC, JIC)
  • Fatigue, crack growth
  • Charpy impact (700 ft·lbf machines; -321 °F through 200+ °F)
  • Nil-Ductility Transition Temperature (NDT)

Metallurgical test methods

  • Metallography
  • Grain size
  • Microcleanliness
  • Macrostructure
  • Corrosion
  • Optical emission spectroscopy
  • Phase identification and phase count

Scot Forge Difference

At Scot Forge, we know the importance of getting your parts on-time, as expected. However, for customers new to procuring forgings, ordering a forging that will meet all specifications for end-use applications may be a challenge, which is why finding a trusted supplier and partner is essential. Our employee-owners are here to ensure your project stays on track with our forgings by offering:

Pro Tip - Did you know near-net shapes can save you time and money? Oftentimes, a customer calls to order a disc, which they will later machine down to a more shaped part. By working with our technically trained sales team you can get as close to your finished product shape as possible to optimize your production process.
